I make no apology for starting with the second game of the season which saw us at home to Shanklin B on Saturday the 16th May. I have glossed over our first match of the season away at Sandown which took place a fortnight earlier as it bore little resemblance to bowls as we know it thanks to a downpour half way through which made it almost impossible to play. Suffice it to say, we struggled throughout and emerged with no points but lots of soaking kit.
Thankfully the home match against Shanklin B took place in dry but cold conditions and the rain held off until we were in the clubhouse. All three rinks were involved in closely contested games with the results in doubt until the closing ends. Dave Wolton (skip) with Trevor Lockyer, Bill Murphy and Stewart Small led for the majority of the match and ran out winners 15-13. Worthy of note were the debuts for the A team of Trevor and Bill who both played a full part for the winning rink.
Chris Emms (skip) with David Brown, Peter Svensden and Norman Cooper were involved in a game of fluctuating fortunes before losing 15-17. As always this experienced rink appreciated the value of each shot in a close contest and so it proved when the overall shots were totted up. Tim Blow (skip) with Steve Day, Gerald Rees and Colin Greer were behind in the early stages but a run of winning ends late on saw them win 17-12. A feature of this match was the close consultation between Tim as a new skip and Colin his number three.
