A fine sunny afternoon greeted us on our arrival at Shanklin. That was probably the highlight of the day. The usually immaculate Shanklin green was a patchwork of their customary carpet like grass and areas lacking in grass altogether. This made it difficult to judge pace as bowls had to cross the various surfaces.

The one constant feature of the afternoon remained the same. Shanklin were able to field three very strong and experienced fours against us. Bill Silvester with Steve Day, Martin Ward and John Hawkes swopped shots in the early stages, edged ahead at one point but were out bowled in the latter ends and lost 16-26.

Cris Emms with David Brown, Peter Svensden and Colin Greer started slowly and were behind in the early stages but came back strongly to edge ahead at the midpoint but were outgunned over the closing ends before losing 15-24.
Patrick Maher with Gerald Rees, Chris Brown and Norman Cooper started slowly, were being comfortably outplayed in the middle ends and were unable to improve over the closing ends, losing 8-38.
