Saturday 12 July was the hottest day of the third heatwave and the men’s B Team were home to the runaway league leaders Sandown C. Undaunted by their league position or the heat it was a good atmosphere.
Rink 3. Bill, Gordon, John Hol and John Hyl took the lead which they held until Sandown fought back taking the lead on the sixth. The lead continued to be swopped, and it was 8 – 9 at tea. The oscillations continued with Sandown leading by 1 after the penultimate end only for Bembridge to score 3 and win 18 – 16.
Rink 4. Bernie, Jeff, Trevor and Paul C did not make a good start and were 0 – 7 before opening their scoring with a 2 on the fifth. By tea it was not looking good at 5 – 14. The team talk or the sugar in the biscuits reached all the right places as Bembridge scored eight on the next three ends. Sandown must have then noticed the score and took the score to 16 – 23 after nineteen ends. Bembridge then staged a final dash to the line ending with very respectable 19 – 23.
Rink 5. Derek, Richie, Norman O and Kev had a close fought game and were 10 – 5 at tea. The tea then had a good effect on Sandown who took the lead for the first time on the seventeenth with a five. Another four or five on the eighteenth was saved by Kev hitting the jack out of bounds forcing a dead end. It was then close fought to end at 17 – 21.
Shot Score: 54 – 60
Points: 2 – 8.
